About the Book
Herbal medicine, also known as herbalism or botanical medicine is the oldest and still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today. It has its origins in ancient cultures and involves the medicinal use of plants to treat disease and enhance general health and wellbeing. It is a method of treating health-related issues, based on the use of plants or plant extracts that may be eaten or applied to the skin. Herbal remedies are well rooted in medical practice. Since ancient times, doctors have collected information about herbs to treat a variety of illnesses and to assist with bodily functions. Although written records about medicinal plants dated back at least 5,000 years to the Sumerians, who described well-established medicinal uses for such plants as laurel, caraway, and thyme , archeological studies have shown that the practice of herbal medicine dates as far back as 60,000 years ago in Iraq and 8,000 years ago in China . With the advent of western medicine (or ??conventional?? medicine) over the past century, herbal medicine has been challenged by practitioners of mainstream medicine because of the lack of scientific evidence in the context of contemporary medicine, despite its long history of effective use. Interestingly, things change with time. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of the use of herbs due to the side effects of chemical drugs, lack of curative modern therapies for several chronic diseases, and microbial resistance, as well as the unprecedented investment in pharmaceutical research and development .The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of the populations of some Asian and African countries presently use herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care. The use of herbal medicine, as one element of complementary and alternative medicine, is increasing worldwide. Herbal medicines are HARMLESS, AFFORDABLE and EASILY AVAILABLE. Herbal medicines contain active ingredients which aim to return the body to a state of natural balance so that it can heal itself. Different herbs act on different systems of the body. In this book there are various chapters which contain detailed study on how Herbal Medicine is emerging as a therapy for chronic diseases when conventional medicine is ineffective in the treatment of disease.
