About the Book
The prime objective of the book is to provide the reader with the insights on Chinua Achebes two novels, Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God. It deftly delineates the fascinating account of African literature. In fact, the book captures the facts and realities of Nigerian Clan. The First Chapter, The African Literary Renaissance presents a wide range of Common Wealth Literature since its inception and brief preamble of African Literature. It touches upon the African Freedom Movement besides the literary expedition. Igbo oral traditions and Igbo culture are introduced to the readers as a way of preserved stories.
The second chapter, The Transition deals with the novel Things Fall Apart in which Achebe describes how the imposed western values led to social, historical and psychological disorientation of traditional African society. A distinctive culture known as Igbo (or Ibo) developed in West Africa 5,000 years ago in traditional perspective like the Creator, God Chukwus masculine force and the cultivation of yams.
The third chapter, Collective Indifferences deals with the novel Arrow of God which explores the intersection of Igbo tradition with European Christianity. It is not just a story of cultures expressions of humanity through its customs, but it shows about their fears and achievements. Culture is involved; shortcomings develop into historical events.
In the fourth chapter, Centrifugal Perspectives focuses on several theories. The novels are analyzed through Marxist elements which show how it refers to the exploitation of an entire segment or class of society by another and the glimpses of feminism are touched. Much information about the customs that are followed by African women is not provided. Generally, a man doesnt consider womens problems as crucial glitches. His main focus is only about the transition of tradition and culture of Igbo people to English culture. Next theory is colonialism which deals with literature written in colonial countries by their citizens that has colonized people as its subject matter. This opposition justifies the Whitemans burden the colonisers self-perceived destiny to rule subordinate people. Finally, a theory of New historicism is apparent in social sphere in which the author is moved with the psychological background with the influence of many factors in his work of art.
In The Conclusion, the role of Chinua Achebe in common wealth literature and his influence over other common wealth writers are projected. Some critics feel that Achebes novels approach a variety of themes and ends with Achebes artistic endeavour.
